This book is based on the assumption that the acting and behavior of the individual cannot be separated from the patterns of thought and meaning of the society it lives in. Therefore, the acting of Islamist activists has to be analyzed under consideration of each person’s background and socialization. This book contains four paradigms through which the majority of the Turkish society views life: the relation of Turkey towards the outside world, the accepted forms of social being-together, the citizen-state relationship and the correlation between the big cultural camps. Furthermore, specific groups of actors are described and analyzed before their sociological background. This book clearly demonstrates that Islamist political theory and activity must be examined and understood under consideration of issues and discussions of their everyday life.    
 
Günter Seufert studied social pedagogy, social sciences and German philology in Würzburg and Bremen and attained his Ph.D. at the University of Bremen with the book in concern. For the University of Lausanne he conducted research on the Turkish-Muslim diaspora in different European countries and has been a contributor to the Orient-Institut Beirut since 1996. He has published on migration, the development of ethnical identities and political Islam.
