This volume contains the main presentations and topics debated about in the course of the international seminar “Multicultural Urban Fabric and Types in the South and Eastern Mediterranean”in Trani, Italy in 2003. Through studying in depth various architectural influences in cities in the Levant and North Africa the contributions depict the formation and change of urban structure and architecture in this region during the last decades. What is more, the texts deal with the coexistence of heterogeneous urban and architectural models within the same towns, the strong cultural interdependence with Europe and the interactions among the sub-regions of the Levant. Hereby this study deepens the understanding of the complexity that defines urban architecture in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean.
Maurice Cerasi has published several works on Ottoman architecture and has been a professor for Architecture at the Politecnico of Milan and at the University of Genoa.
Attilio Petruccioli has been Aga Khan Professor of Design for Islamic Societies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and currently works as professor of Landscape Architecture and Dean of the School of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Bari.
Adriana Sarro is associate professor of Design in the Faculty of Architecture at Palermo.
Stefan Weber is assistant professor of Material History at the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilizations, Aga Khan University, London.
