This book is a pioneering work on the etymological origins of Lebanese place names. In the first part of his work, Stefan Wild elaborates on general concepts of typology. In particular, he indicates other influences than the Arabic language on the naming of Lebanese towns. The second part consists of catalogues of Lebanese town names, arranged by morphological peculiarities and other criteria, with special reference to cultural and geographical loanwords.

Among other positions, Stefan Wild held a chair for Semitic languages and Islamic Studies at Bonn University and the directorship of the Orient-Institut Beirut. His main research areas are classic Arabic literature and lexicography as well as modern Arabic literature and contemporary thought.
