This piece of research aims at making the magazines accessible to the reader of today as a historical source. It offers background information on the history, the artists, authors and publishers, suggests interpretations and thereby presents a lively image of the varying political ideologies that are to be found within the magazines. The volume’s main focus lies on three satirical magazines covering the Balkan Crisis beginning in 1908 and ranging to 1913. The way the different authors reflect upon the politics and regional conflicts of their time enables the public to draw conclusions about their values and identities and is therefore an important contribution to the socio-political study of this region and time-period.
Tobias Heinzelmann studied Islamic Studies and History of Art at the University of Freiburg and obtained his Ph.D. in 2003 from the University of Heidelberg. Since 2013 he is a lecturer for Islamic Studies at the University of Zurich.
