Dedicated to the memory of Michael Meinecke, the director of Berlin's Islamic Museum, who died suddenly in early 1994, this volume contains the text of twenty-three papers presented ten years ago at a conference organized by Prof. Barbara Finster at the Otto-Friedrich Universität in Bamberg, Germany. Several authors write on the concept of reflection and see it mainly as an adoption of a motive that holds on to its characteristics within a new context. This continuity of a concept can be found clearly within the field of architecture and furniture, especially during the Abbasid era, which form the central topics of this book.
Barbara Finster studied Islamic Science, History of Art and Archaeology at the Universities of Erlangen, Tübingen, Granada and Istanbul and currently holds the position for Professor of Islamic Art and Archaeology at the University of Bamberg.

Herta Hafenrichter studied Islamic Sciences and Semitic philology and is a member of the Institute for non-European languages and cultures of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and is responsible for scientific publications.
