In his publication, Ende examines the role of the Umayyad dynasty in the historical view of the Muslim community. Under the aspects of nationalism and secularism, several Arab authors and historians of the early 20th century are displayed about their view on rulers, actors and historical events during the Umayyad era.
Prof. Werner Ende was Professor for Contemporary Islamic Studies at the University of Hamburg. His research interests focus on the Arab historiography in the modern era and the history of Muslim sects in Sunni and Shia.
