This volume contains various contributions presented at a conference held in Beirut in 2005 under the title: “Al-Jāḥiẓ: A Muslim Humanist for our Time” - al-Jāḥiẓ being one of the most famous writers of classical Arabic prose (d. 225h/868 CE). Brought together by the American University of Beirut and the Orient-Institut Beirut this work contains a collection of essays and analysis that offer a unique assessment of his works in regard to his expression of humanism and investigate in various aspects of al-Jāḥiẓ’s intellectual and literary achievements.
Arnim Heinemann was a research assistant at the Orient-Institut Beirut from 2004 until 2008 and currently holds the position of managing director at the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies. John L. Meloy is an associate professor at the Department of History and Archaeology at the American University of Beirut. Tarif Khalidi is a professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Center for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies of the American University of Beirut. Manfred Kropp is professor of Semitic languages and Islamic Studies at the University of Mainz and was director of the Orient-Institut Beirut from 2000 until 2007.
