Ansāb al-ašrāf is a genealogical encyclopedia of the Arab-Islamic state. Its order follows that of Ibn al-Kalbī’s Ğamharat an-nasab, but Balāḏurī (d. 279/892) expands upon the biographies of the first four caliphs, as well as those of the ʿUmayyad and ʿAbbāsid caliphs, whenever their names appear within the genealogical scheme of the work.

As for this specific volume (the third volume of the fourth part), it contains biographies of the rest of the Umayyad (Marwānid) caliphs. It includes part of ʿAbd al-Malik’s biography, followed by biographies of his offspring, and those of ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, al-Walīd b. Yazīd, and Marwān b. Muḥammad. Each biography of these deals with the policies of the concerned caliph and his governors, his children, and his internal and external relations, as well as with rebellious movements in his era. 

The editor of this volume, Professor Riḍwān as-Sayyid, made use of three different manuscripts to produce this critical edition of the work, and his annotations contain comparisons with other literary sources. The publication of this long-awaited volume will be certainly welcomed by all scholars and students of early Islam.^...

معلومٌ أنّ "أنساب الأشراف" كتاب موسوعيّ ضخم في الجِينالُوجيا النَّسَبيّة للدولة العربيّة الإسلاميّة، رتّبه مُصنِّفُه على وَفق ترتيب "جمهرة النَّسَب" لابن الكلبي، بَيْدَ أنّ البلاذُري يتوسّع في أخبار الخلفاء الراشدين بحسب بُطونهم، كما يتوسّع في أخبار الخلفاء الأمويّين والعبّاسيّين.

أمّا فيما له مَساسٌ بالمجلّد الذي بين أيدينا (القسم الثالث من الجزء الرابع)، فيشتمل على ذكر بقيّة أخبار خلفاء بني أميّة من المَرْوانِيّين، ففيه قسمٌ من أخبار عبد الملك بن مروان، مشفوعًا بأخبار أولاده، ثمّ أخبار عُمر بن عبدالعزيز والوليد بن يزيد ومروان بن محمّد، بحيث تَعرِض ترجمةُ كُلٍّ منهم لسياسات كُلٍّ ووُلاِته وأولاده، وعلاقاتِه الداخليّة والخارجيّة، وثَوْرات الخوارج إبّان ولايته.

اعتمد المحقّق، الأستاذ الدكتور رضوان السيّد، في عمله على ثلاث مخطوطات، واستغرق وقته كُلَّه كيما يخرُج هذا العمل الضخم (1124 صفحة) على أحسن وجه، دِقّةً وأناقةً وبهاءَ حُلّة. ^...
