Abstract

Since 2002, the archaeological remains of Baalbek are scientifically re-studied in a cooperative project of the Directorate General of Antiquities and the German Archaeological Institute. The project aims at analyzing all archaeological remains of this impressive site as well as offering support in the preservation of them. During a cleaning and excavation project in June 2014 a new megalith was detected in the famous quarry of the Hajjar al-Hibla stone in Baalbek.

By presenting the first scientific results, this new finding will be contextualized within the overall project and the Roman history of Baalbek.

Bio

Dr. Margarete van Ess is Scientific Director of the Orient Department of the German Archaeological Institute and Head of the German Archaeological Projekt in Baalbek. She holds a PhD in Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology by the Free University of Berlin and is responsible for several archaeological projects in Middle Eastern Countriesand especially in Iraq and Lebanon. 

Dr. Jeanine Abdul Massih is Professor for Classical Archaeology at the Lebanese University. She holds a PhD on Architecture and town planning of Hellenistic cities with special focus on Dura Europos (Syria). She is Director of the Cyrrhus Excavations (Syria) and since 2004 carries out research on the quarries in Baalbek in collaboration with the German team.
