This international symposium examines the development of anthropology in the Maghreb, Mashreq and the Gulf. It aims to contribute in a collaborative way to the analysis of the institutional development of anthropology, its insertion into transregional dynamics, and the challenges of conducting ethnographic research in some countries.
The first part of the symposium focuses on some anthropologists’ individual trajectories deemed particularly relevant for the discussion of the insertion of anthropology in local or national research landscapes. The second includes national or subnational case studies to investigate the institutional development, or lack thereof, of anthropology in various countries. The third and last section offers a glimpse into how selected themes are dealt with by scholars based in the region who publish in Arabic or French or other languages, and not exclusively in English.
