Michel Jiha’s dialect study expands the previous dialectological research on the Arabic-speaking world. Particularly the Syro-Lebanese dialectal region has so far only been subject of general treatises, with the exception of studies on Kfar ‘Abida, Zahlé and Tripoli. Jiha is concerned with a specific dialect – the one of his hometown Bišmizzīn, which is mainly populated by greek-orthodox inhabitants. Therefore, he recorded stories and reports of eleven informants and analyzed them using phonology and morphology. He describes the phonetic conditions of his recordings and displays their morphological particularities.
Michel Jiha was born in Bišmizzīn and lived there until his graduation from High School. He studied at the American University of Beirut and received his PhD from Münster University.
