Modern Arabic computer characters are based on an inconsistent legacy of industrial practices, not on a scientific understanding of Arabic orthography and writing conventions (script grammar). The workshop will give an overview on the Omani Mushaf Muscat project and its research history against this background. The workshop will consider as well the implications for the digitalization of Arabic texts at large, both contemporary and historic and for Arabic-scripted texts in other languages.
