The Orient-Institut Beirut holds two paintings of Khalil Saleeby, known as the pioneer of modern Lebanese painting, from the estates of the Sarkis family. The paintings and their ornamented frames were recently restored. Conservation expert Cornelia Rüth will present the paintings and the restoration works and open a discussion about new findings.
The two portrait paintings show Khalil Sarkis and his wife, Louise Sarkis, née Boustani in half figure. They were signed by the painter and show the date of 1925. Both paintings remain in their original material form without any revisions. They thereby allow direct insight into the manner of painting and the techniques used by the artist. The conservation and restoration works have mended some mechanical damage, loss and loosening of original substance in the portraits and the frames, and have thereby secured the paintings in a sustainable manner.
Cornelia Rüth studied painting restoration at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts where she graduated 1980 as Diplom-Gemälderestauratorin. Since 1992, she has worked freelance for several museums, such as the Gemäldegalerie and the Alte Nationalgalerie of the Berlin State Museums, where she has restored paintings originating from the 13th to the 20th centuries. She also operates her own restoration atelier in Berlin.
