March, 22 to February 23, 2018
A conversation between British artist Eileen Cooper and Nadia von Maltzahn (OIB) around her exhibition “Under the Same Moon” on show at Letitia Gallery in Beirut-Hamra between 2 February and 31 March 2018.
Eileen Cooper is a painter and printmaker. Her work has been described as magic realism. Eileen Cooper first came to Lebanon in October 2017 in the frame of the International Conference “Contextualising the Art Salon in the Arab Region”, co-organised by the OIB and the Sursock Museum. During her trip, she got inspired by Lebanon’s nature and mythology. We talk to Eileen about the making of her latest exhibition at Letitia Gallery, how she took inspiration from artifacts displayed at the National Museum in Beirut, and about ideas of timelessness and universality.
Eileen Cooper studied at Goldsmiths College (1971-1974), being in the cohort of students who were selected by Jon Thompson. She went on to study Painting at the Royal College of Art under Peter de Francia, graduating in 1977. She was elected a Royal Academician in 2001 and was appointed as the Head of Printmaking in the Royal Academy Schools a few years later. From 2010-2017 Eileen Cooper served as Keeper of the Royal Academy, the first woman to be elected to this role since the Academy began in 1768. The Keeper is responsible for supporting and guiding the students of the Royal Academy.
