Abstract:

The lecture will start with a presentation of various approaches to locate Arab nationalism in the cultural, social and political context of the Arab world in the twentieth century, emphasizing the role of ideology and social as well as cultural practice in the formation of modern identities. A case study will show how the demands of social practice put into question categorizations in the secular and religious fields, or strict delineations of elite and populace. The presentation is based on the book Arab Nationalism: The Politics of History and Culture in the Modern Middle East, Routledge, 2017.

Short biography:

Peter Wien is Associate Professor for Modern Middle Eastern History and Associate Chair of the History Department at the University of Maryland in College Park. His main research interests are at the intersection of nationalism and religion in the formation of modern Middle Eastern societies. His book Arab Nationalism: The Politics of History and Culture in the Modern Middle East (London, New York: Routledge) came out in 2017. In 2006, he published Iraqi Arab Nationalism: Authoritarian, Totalitarian and Pro-Fascist Inclinations, 1932-1941 (London, New York: Routledge). Peter Wien is also the President of The Academic Research Institute in Iraq (TARII).
