Taboo, trauma and identity

Subject constructions of Palestinians in Germany and Switzerland, 1960-2015

The systematic expulsions of Palestinians from Palestine/Israel, which have been ongoing since 1947, can be traced back, among other things, to the European history of British colonialism and German National Socialism. Nevertheless, the Palestinian experience of violence is excluded from European collective memory and silenced.
Sarah El Bulbeisi deals with the impacts of this tabooing on Palestinians in Germany and Switzerland and with the mark it left in the parent-child relationship. She shows how the traumatic experience of settler colonialism and ethnic cleansing is continued in the experience of German and Swiss racism and in the confrontation with "the hegemonic dream of innocence".
