This volume is meant to serve as a remembrance and a tribute to one of the founding fathers of the Orient-Institut Beirut who was its second director from 1963 until 1968 and established the series “Beiruter Texte und Studien” as an academic series. In 1998 Prof. Dr. Ulrich Haarmann and Prof. Dr. Angelika Neuwirth came up with the idea to publish a representative collection of his essays and articles in the same series. This book contains 30 different pieces of work, most of them previously published during Steppat’s lifetime, ranging from historical and political topics to literature and even fundamentalism.

Fritz Steppat is considered one of the most important German pioneers of contemporary Oriental research. He was the founder of the Goethe-Institute in Cairo, director of the Orient-Institut Beirut, professor for Islamic Studies at the Free University of Berlin and director of the “Forschungsschwerpunkt Moderner Orient” in Berlin and by this helped to shape the Oriental Studies in Germany as a whole.
