This volume contains a collection of contributions presented at a scientific symposium held by the departmentfor the Christian Orient and the Byzantium of the University Halle-Wittenberg in 2005. It was the first international symposium devoted to the study of Edessa and its importance in the field of cultural studies. Comprising papers from various fields such as history, archaeology, religious and Oriental studies and literature, this collection provides a detailed insight into the current state of research, the complexity of this specific topic of research and the diversity of questions and methods to be used. Together the contributions assist a great deal in completing scientific knowledge of Edessa’s history of culture and ideas in Hellenistic Roman times.   

Lutz Greisiger studied studies of the Christian Orient and Jewish Studies at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, in which he is presently working, and Studies of Religion at Leipzig University. Claudia Rammelt studied theology in Halle, Thessaloniki, Tübingen and Beirut and is presently working at the department of Evangelic-Theological Studies at the University of Bochum. Prof. Dr. Jürgen Tubach is a professor at the department for the Christian Orient and the Byzantium at the University of Halle-Wittenberg.
