ʿAbd al-Ġanī an-Nābulusī was an Arab Sufi, scholar, and writer from Damascus. He is considered a key figure of Islamic enlightenment. A contemporary of many intellectuals, scientists, poets, and philosophers of the European Age of Enlightenment, his life and works were at the roots of modernity in the Arab World. His travel accounts serve as important primary sources about the Arabic world in his times. In this work, Busse examines his journeys to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina and through Lebanon.
Hermann Busse was head of the Oriental Studies department at Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel, Germany, from 1973 through 1991. His research concentrated on the inter-religious relations between Judaism, Christianity and Islam, as well as early Islamic history and Arab-Persian diplomacy. He is also the author of BTS 6.
