Jannis Niehoff-Panagiotidis is the offspring of an Istanbul - Beirut family and Professor of Byzantine and Ottoman Studies at FU Berlin.
He focusses on documentary evidence for the Christians in the Near East in Byzantine and Ottoman, especially Early Ottoman times. In the focus of his current research is the history of the Patriarchate of Antiocheia/Antakya and its monasteries, including Jerusalem. The documents of this are dispersed in various archives in the Near East, including Egypt. He is currently chairing an ongoing project on the Ottoman Archive in Thessaloniki.
