On 6 August 2024, Prof. em. Werner Ende passed away after a long illness. Ende was OIB Research Associate from 1969 to 1971 and was an OIB supporter ever since. He taught Islamic Studies at Freiburg University from 1983 until his retirement in 2002. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung's obituary considers him "a pioneer of present-oriented Islamic history."
