Monique Bellan joined the Orient-Institut Beirut in 2013 as a research associate. Previously she worked as an assistant at the Performing Arts Section of the Academy of Arts in Berlin and as a research associate at the research centre “Aesthetic Experience and the Dissolution of Artistic Limits” at Freie Universität Berlin. There she obtained a doctorate in Middle Eastern Studies in 2012 with a thesis on contemporary Lebanese theatre. Her current research project focusses on aesthetic reflection in 20th century Lebanon and Egypt and avant-garde movements.

Her research interests include: politics; aesthetics and language; artistic and literary avant-garde; contemporary artistic practices; art theory; nahda.
