Abstract
In 1936 Syria and France signed a treaty of independence, promising to end the mandate and bring a treaty of "friendship and alliance." The French government failed to ratify the treaty. The mandate in Syria and Lebanon ended, but by war, not treaty, in favor of first French Vichy, and then British, military, occupation. This talk will discuss some recent archival research on the period and its forgotten mysteries.
