Prof. Dr. Andrea M. Esser (Department of Philosophy, University of Jena)
Abstract:
The concept of progress plays a central role in Kant's practical philosophy. Without question, it possesses an emancipatory, resistive potential, as it critically addresses the current conditions and offers the prospect of a better future. Kant made a valuable effort to critically justify this concept. Nevertheless, it is precisely in the context of Kant's writings on the philosophy of history and in its application to concrete situations that this concept proves to be highly problematic and unfolds its repressive dimension. In short: it reveals its dialectics. Precisely because this term is still used today in social communication and political philosophy, it requires a critical revision.
