Abstract

This presentation focuses on how al-Suyuti's scholarship has a remarkable influence on the makings of Islamic scholarship in the Southeast Asian region. Among al-Suyuti's popular work, that is Tafsir al-Jalalayn (co-authored with his main teacher, Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 1459), is claimed to have been used by the nine saints in the 16th century who played a main role in the spread of Islam in the island of Java. Another al-Suyuti's popular work, that is al-Itqan fi 'Ulum al-Qur'an, has been mentioned as one of the references in the writing of early 20th-century monolingual Javanese Qur'an by Bagus Ngarpah, an Islamic scholar in the late 19th-and early 20th-century Javanese court. Taking specific examples in some parts of the Southeast Asian region, I will observe some of his works that might still exist as part of the manuscript collections and how his scholarship has been used or cited by the Islamic scholars of the region for Islamic pedagogical purposes up to the present times.

Bio

Ervan Nurtawab teaches religious studies at Jurai Siwo Lampung State Islamic University, Indonesia. He is an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow (2022-2025) at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS)-University of Freiburg, Germany, for the research project: "Qur'anic manuscripts from Southeast Asia: Differences, diversities and standardisation". Specialising in Malay-Indonesian Islamic studies, his publications cover studies of Islamic manuscripts, Qur'anic studies, Islamic textual tradition and Islamic education in Southeast Asia. Ervan completed his PhD from Monash University in 2018 for research title: Jalalayn pedagogical practice: "Styles of Qur'an and tafsir learnings in contemporary Indonesia". For his doctoral project, Ervan studied practices of Tafsir al-Jalalayn learning in different pedagogical settings: traditional, modern and competition stage, and how the existence of this tafsir reflects different understandings and manifestations of Islam in the Indonesian Islamic public sphere.
