Abstract:

Solidarity is often regarded as the epitome of affective entanglement. It is historically also transnational. Acts of solidarity connect worlds apart. Distance and non-identity are constitutive of solidarity work, which is conceptually distinct from the political work of brotherhood/sisterhood ties. This article examines Arabic glosses of solidarity – al-ʿaṣabiyya, al-takāful, al-taḍāmun – discerns a distinction between filiative and affiliative forms of political action and belonging. It probes the nature of solidarity to ask conceptually and perhaps philosophically: What is solidarity, actually? What are its neighbouring or rivalling concepts and why is it important to draw such distinctions?
