This lecture is the third lecture of the OIB/COSIMENA seminar series and will be followed by a gathering in the garden.
Abstract
The early Islamic period can be easily said to be the most contested period in Islamic history. Conflicting views of what happened during the first and a half centuries after the Prophet Muhammad’s mission have informed disputes over centuries and continue to do so until today: Did the Prophet Muhammad appoint a successor? What can we know about the character of the Prophet? How and when did the Qur’an emerge and reach its final form? Are the hadiths reliable records of what the Prophet Muhammad said and did? We will look into some of the conflicting answers to these and other questions and enquire where the different views come from and whether they can be reconciled.
