Oraib Toukan
Metropolis Cinema
Tuesday, 29. September 2026, 18:00-19:30
This event is in collaboration with Metropolis Cinema and Rusted Radishes: Beirut Literary and Art Journal
Films by Oraib Toukan made between 2016 and 2022 that engage with Palestine —Via Dolorosa (21 min), When Things Occur (28 min), and Offing (28 min)— that explore visibility, distance in time and space to suffering, and the political economy of images of violence. The screening will be followed by a conversation with the artist.
This event is part of ‘The Public Life of Empathy’, a multidisciplinary project curated by Zeina G. Halabi that asks what happens to empathy when it encounters the extreme conditions of war and genocide. Rather than treating empathy as an uncomplicated capacity for identification or solidarity, the project examines its limits, contradictions, and political stakes: How do writers and artists represent suffering without reducing it to spectacle? What ethical demands are placed on those who witness violence, and on those who mediate it through language, images, and art? And what forms of relation to the suffering of others remain possible when violence itself challenges the very possibility of understanding, identification, and representation?
